WRONG tis the season to be JOLLY!
Working in retail for the past 11 years has really shown me how awful some people really act during this time of year. Accidents in the parking lots while fighting for 'the closest spot', being rude (passive aggressively by loudly complaining so employees will hear) while having to wait in checkout lines, being pushy and shovey while walking down aisles. It's really boils my water to see people this way - especially this time of year. Around my work we've been joking that people are really into the holiday spirit this season.
This time of year can be very stressful; gifts, food prep, traveling, low budgets, no time... the list can go on. It is understandable that you are going to have a moment when you aren't going to be shinning your brightest, and that moment just might be in the public eye. While reading my Fitness Magazine just a moment ago (which prompted this post) I came across a quick snippet about how to quickly overcome stressful situations. I don't know about you, but I don't want any coal in my stocking this year, so I thought I'd share to help you from loosing your cool and overcoming a tough situation.
"Researchers at the University of Kansas in Lawrence discovered that smiling during a stressful situation can help you chill out. When study participants did so, it took only two to three minutes for their heart rate to return to normal (grumpy folks' tickers raced for more than five minutes). 'The activation of the muscles involved in smiling can have an impact on mood, making you happier', says lead study author Tara Kraft. Don't just plaster on a fake grin; a 'smize' (a smile that extends to your eyes) is best for getting yourself out of a funk" - Fitness Magazine January 2013 pg 25
So keep a smile on your face and just keep breathing, the stress will pass and the feelings will change.
